Internet in your residence – access & faults

Internet access is included with the accommodation under the standard agreement. The connection, activation, Wi-Fi, router operation and support may nevertheless differ by residence or technical system. Check the current moving-in and network information for your residence first. 1)

First-time registration, devices & mailing list

Personal first-time registration applies to every residence and matters for more than internet access: this process also adds you to your residence’s mailing list. You then register a specific device or router.

What the residence mailing list is used for

Residence management, the residence council and Welcome tutors normally use the list. Typical messages include organisational information from residence management, local dates, residents‘ meetings, community activities and information for new arrivals. For important statements, still check the sender: a message from the residence council or tutors is not automatically a binding statement from Studierendenwerk.

A second-hand router can skip the prompt

If you take over a router that was already registered by a flatmate or previous resident, the system may not ask you to register another device. Internet access may work even though you personally have not been added to the mailing list correctly. Complete your personal first-time registration or reassignment regardless of the router. If the registration route is not displayed, use the current official support contact and ask them to check your personal assignment.

One external IT contractor operates and supports the system across all residences. Its company name is deliberately not presented as a permanent contact: residents should use the current official support route, and a contractor can change. Follow the current instructions for your residence and never use somebody else’s login details.

Setting up access

  1. Check whether your room uses LAN, Wi-Fi or both.
  2. Complete your personal first-time registration, followed by any required device registration.
  3. Check that you receive the local mailing list or information channel.
  4. Follow the usage and data-protection rules.
  5. Re-register a second-hand router if the local instructions require this.

Narrowing down a fault safely

  1. Check the cable or Wi-Fi connection on your own device.
  2. If possible, test a second device of your own or a known working cable.
  3. Check local maintenance or fault notices.
  4. Note the time, connection type, device and exact error message.
  5. Use the current support route from your moving-in documents or local notice.

For technical faults, [email protected] remains the current contact address. Include the details needed to identify your connection, but never send passwords or other login information. The exact registration address for first-time registration is not currently documented reliably; use the moving-in and network information for your residence.
