Sorting & disposing of waste
Correct disposal keeps communal areas safe and avoids additional work. The bins provided differ between residences; Hamburg’s disposal routes apply to bulky waste, electrical equipment and hazardous substances.
Check locally first
Use only the bins actually provided at your residence. Waste areas, collection days and local instructions may differ.
What goes where?
- General waste: non-recyclable household waste; no batteries, electrical equipment, paint or chemicals.
- Packaging: completely emptied lightweight packaging made from plastic, metal or composite materials; no other plastic objects.
- Paper and cardboard: clean and dry; flatten boxes to save space.
- Waste glass: sort glass packaging by colour into public glass bins; no window glass, mirrors, ceramics or porcelain.
- Food and garden waste: only where a bio-waste bin is provided, and without plastic bags or other contaminants.
Bulky waste
Furniture, mattresses and other bulky items do not belong in the bin room or beside the bins. Depending on the residence, the residence council or residence management may occasionally organise a shared collection. Use this route only following a current announcement stating the place and time. If there is no local collection, you must arrange collection or drop-off yourself through Stadtreinigung Hamburg.
Electrical equipment, batteries & hazardous waste
Electrical equipment, rechargeable batteries and batteries can cause fires and must not go into general waste or packaging bins. Use take-back points or recycling centres. Paint, chemicals and other hazardous substances are accepted separately.
Bicycles & bicycle storage
Where bicycle storage is available, all residents at that residence may use it. Leave your bicycle only in the designated places and keep passageways, doors and escape routes clear.
Residences regularly announce bicycle-tagging campaigns. These identify bicycles that have been unused or abandoned for a long time and remove them using the announced procedure. Watch the notices, mailing list and other local channels, and respond within the stated period. The residence will communicate the exact dates, tags and removal process locally.
Corridors & escape routes
Corridors, stairwells, doors and emergency exits must remain clear. Do not leave rubbish bags, boxes, furniture or electrical equipment there. This is a safety rule, not merely a matter of tidiness.
Costs and consequences
Incorrect disposal can create extra work, special collections and local measures. The wiki does not claim that the resulting costs are automatically charged to an individual or shared across all residents; your agreement, the identified cause and the relevant invoice determine this.
