Advice for students – housing, money & personal pressures

Choose the starting point that matches your concern. Contact details and office hours change, so the wiki links directly to the current official page instead of copying fixed times.

Do not wait for an advice appointment

For immediate danger to you or somebody else, call 112. For an immediate police emergency, call 110. An ordinary advice service does not replace the emergency services.

The Counselling Centre for Social and International Affairs (BeSI) is an official starting point for social, personal and financial questions and for matters affecting international students.

Studierendenwerk’s official overview directs you to psychological counselling, study advice and university-specific support.

The Welcome tutor programme is aimed particularly at international students. Tutors provide support before arrival and on moving-in day, help with settling in, language or organisational barriers and intercultural conflicts, and organise local opportunities to meet people. They do not replace residence management or specialist advice, but can help you find the right starting point.

Current residence-specific contacts, office hours and the general address [email protected] are listed on the official Welcome tutor programme page.

The Counselling Centre for Study Financing (BeSt) is the official starting point for BAföG, scholarships, loans and other ways to finance your studies. BeSI may also be suitable where you are already under acute financial pressure.

The Accommodation Advisory Centre (BeWo) answers questions about applications and student accommodation. For an ongoing agreement, notice or a specific administrative case, your residence management or the service named in the letter is the first route.

For a matter involving your own agreement, first request a clear written answer from residence management and keep your agreement, letters and deadlines. For an independent legal assessment, use a service expressly offering legal advice, such as a current service from your university or students‘ union. The wiki does not provide legal advice or assert rights in an individual case.

Check the service in advance

Confidentiality, costs, languages and eligibility depend on the service. Check these details on the advice provider’s current page.
